How does the Satellite TV transmission works

The television satellites are all in geosynchronous orbit, meaning that they are located in the sky relative to the Earth. Each satellite is launched into space and revolve around the planet once every 24 hoursat about 7,000 mph (11,000 kph), reaching approximately 22,200 miles (35,700 km) above the Earth. It is approximately same period of time it takes the Earth to make one full rotation. In other words, the satellite keeps pace with our moving planet exactly. Therefore, during installation, your dish only have to be adjusted once. The direction and angle of the dish is important to pick up the signal.

There are several important steps between the original programming source and your television.

  • Programming sources are those channels that provide programming for broadcast. The provider like Dish network and DirecTv don't produce original programming itself; it pays third party companies such as ESPN, MTV, Discovery Channel, etc for the business to broadcast their content via satellite. In analogy, the provider is playing role as a middleman between you and the programming channel company.
  • The broadcast center is the central hub of the Satellite TV system. It allows the Satellite TV provider receives signals from various programming sources and beams the broadcast signal in radiowave format to satellites which is staying in geosychronous orbit.
  • The satellites receive the signals from the broadcast station and repeat them to the earth in specify coverage area.
  • The viewer's dish receive the broadcast signal from the satellites and passes it to the receiverin the viewer's house through cable .
  • The receiver processes the signal and display it on to the TV screen.
